Tracks of my Years - 1973

In the news:

The UK joined the EEC, apparently without much celebration...

The Cod War raged. Apparently it wasn't like this...

Princess Anne married fellow equestrian, Mark Phillips.

The first Pizza Hut opened in the UK

I'm not sure what Mamma would think of this one!

'Peace with honour' in Vietnam

LBC, the first independent radio station permitted on UK airwaves, began broadcasting

On TV:

'The Wombles'

From the distance of forty years, I apologise profusely to my Dad, for my incessant playing of 'The Wombling Song'.
And to the British public for being one of the people who helped put this single at number 4 in the charts!
In my defence, I thought I was part of a bold campaign to make Britain litter free...That clearly didn't work!

(Here's something that ALMOST makes the Wombles worthwhile though...

'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em' brought us the hapless Frank Spencer.

 Ooh Betty!

'That's Life!'

'The World at War'

'New Faces' came to ITV bringing us such class acts as Jim Davidson, Showaddywaddy, The Chuckle Brothers, Roger de Courcey and Nookie Bear...

(Also,  Victoria Wood.   So maybe I'll forgive ITV.)

At the cinema:

On the radio:

Yesterday Once More - The Carpenters

Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) - George Harrison

You're So Vain - Carly Simon

Eye Level - The Simon Park Orchestra

Whisky in the Jar - Thin Lizzy

Monster Mash - Bobby 'Boris' Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers

Osmond mania reigned...

Young Love - Donny Osmond

Paper Roses - Marie Osmond

Let Me In - The Osmonds

In December there was a battle between two of the all-time best Christmas songs...

Merry Christmas Everyone - Slade

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day - Wizzard

And 'Stuck in the Middle With You' - Stealers Wheel

(Watch out - bizarre video!  Not for those of an delicate disposition!)

This year's photo is a school one.  The school must have just just decided to do 'with siblings' photos.  And this photo maybe shows why this is not always a good idea!

My sister looks perfect - neat and tidy, her hair combed with the comb I refused to use in spite of her exhortations!  Hence the 'dragged-through-a-hedge-backwards' look.  And my brother is pulling a face, maybe because his leg was in plaster and he had wanted the photographer to get his leg in shot too!

(We didn't have to wear school uniform, so I'm seriously impressed by my brother's shirt and tie!)

    1. Completely useless fact - that isn't the lead singer who was Gerry Rafferty, but he'd left before they made the video, so Joe Egan (who did the harmonies) had to mime the part. Mine of pointless info me. Well, a shallow dip...

  4. Oh. Love these posts, Ali! I still watch Some Mother and think it's as funny now ... My youngest son loved it too, and used to watch it with tears rung down his face (of hilarity) and rolling about the floor, helpless with laughter ... His catch phrase was "I'm a married man" (Harry's, not Frank's)

    Have a sunny Sunday

    Love Claire xxx
