Time to Empty the Bookshelf - Bookie Giveaway No 2

So this little pile was pulled off the bookshelf last week and put beside the computer to get 'reviewed'  before hopefully sending them off to new readers.  Then I went off at a tangent with other recent events and didn't get round to extolling the virtues of the books.

So, before I get sidetracked once again, I will plough straight on!

I'm pretty sure I already covered 'A Tiny Bit Marvellous' - suffice to say, it made me laugh to start with, but after a while I tired of it.  I still finished it, but you know, it didn't quite live up to expectations.

'My Dear, I Wanted to Tell You' is set in the Great War and deals with the wartime experiences of Riley and Peter, from different ends of the social scale, in the trenches; and Nadine, Julia and Rose, the women left behind in England.  It almost goes without saying that it was an emotional read, but it was also interesting to learn of the work of Dr Harold Gillies, a pioneer of plastic surgery.  I quite liked the book, though if I was at a Book Club and was pushed, I might say that I didn't really 'engage' with the characters to start with - maybe till the point where I'd go past the modern-sounding names of Riley and Nadine!   How shallow am I?

To be fair, when I read this, I had just wolfed down 'The Snow Child' and 'The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared', both of which I had adored. Tough acts to follow!

Next I read 'The Silver Linings Playbook'.  I had chosen this because the film had done well at the Oscars, but I hadn't seen it, and because we were on holiday and I thought it was a book both Mr U-t-B and I might read.

I found this a real page turner - I was really drawn to the characters and wanted it all to turn out well for them.  It was both emotional and hilarious - but be warned, the plot of the book and the film do differ slightly!  I watched the film after, and felt a bit let down because some of the bits I found best in the book had been changed.  But maybe if I'd seen the film first, I'd have felt differently...

Jo of Fiddlesnips blog very kindly sent me 'The Sisters Brothers' as she thought I might like it - and she was right!  I'd probably never have chosen it myself  as I wouldn't have known that I would so enjoy a story of two assassins in the Wild West during the Gold Rush,  where death, despair and violence are part of every chapter. The black humour had me laughing out loud at times and the main character, Eli, is very likeable, especially for a psychopath...

Here's the one I chose for the front cover!  I'm trying to stop myself from being drawn in by covers, but this one got me.  It is a story set on a remote island off the Australian coast in the years after the First World War, where Tom, the lighthousekeeper, and his wife, Isabel, live in almost complete isolation.  In some ways it was similar to 'My Dear I Wanted to Tell You' in that the story hinges on a deception and how that deception impacts lives.

Well, finally, the one I'm close to finishing now.  This is another 'quirky' book.  It's funny  and moving (I seem to be reading a lot of those these days) though a weeny bit long-winded at times.  Oh dear, I am beoming awfully critical.  Not exactly giving these the hard sell am I?

Hard sell?

Well, I am trying to give these away (all except The Silver Linings Playbook which I've already sent to someone who didn't get one last time and who I thought might enjoy it!)

If you are interested in reading any of the others, do tell me which one in a comment and I will send it winging its way to you.  This time I'm just going to do it on a 'first come, first served' basis, to make sure they disappear before I go on holiday! (Yay!  I've finished at school for the year and I'm hoping to get away for a few days soon!)

Last call for the giveaway and some little lovelies

Look at these that I purchased from the charity shop a few weeks back...

They had been sent back from one of the shops where they hadn't sold, so they were already priced, which meant I didn't feel remotely guilty about nabbing them before they got sent on to a different shop!

They are not my usual style, but I just love them!

(They are Elizabethan 'Carnaby', in case you want to know.)

Anyway, this post is really just serving as a final reminder that a certain small Miss will be drawing names out of a hat sometime after lunchtime today!  So if you are interested but have not 'signed up' with a comment, hop along here before midday today!

Rag Bag Rescue - Liberty and linen bunting

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you may remember that around this time last year, Mr U-t-B and I had the pleasure of attending a very lovely, stylish and friendly wedding up in Yorkshire.

Well, we were delighted to hear just last week that the happy couple had just welcomed a bouncing baby boy into their lives.

Bunting was called for...

(Which necessitated a trip to the actual shop of one of my favourite online fabric stores - The Eternal Maker down in Chichester.  Talk about kiddie-in-a-sweet-shop excited!  It was definitely worth the trip (about an hour) but so hard to choose what to buy!  I got some sweet boy-ish print fat-quarters, as well as a couple of longer lengths of fabric for upcoming dress-making projects.)

Having enjoyed making the bunting for little Charlie, I then decided to make some for another newish baby in our midst which I hadn't made when she was born in January for one reason or another.

In contrast to the busy prints for Charlie's, I decided to cut the pennants from salvaged pieces of white linen and cotton, some embroidered or embellished with lace - old dressing table mats, anti-macassars and pieces of tablecloth that were too damaged to use as they were.  The letters were cut from Liberty 'Pepper' in pink.

You get a hint of the rose print seersucker I used for the back with this slightly sheer cotton guest towel...

I don't sew my pennants right side to right side and turn them out, as I like to pink the edges after sewing a double row of top-stitching using a double needle instead.

I deliberately didn't cut the pennants on the straight grain of the salvaged fabrics, as I wanted to see if they would hang okay that way.  Luckily they hang fine, and it means that you can choose the 'good' bits of the rescued fabrics(ie prettiest, or undamaged).

I'm happy with my salvaged bunting - in fact I've got some more on the go, ready to seek commissions at upcoming markets.

Before I finish, a bit more applique.  AGES ago I appliqued a VW van notebook cover for my Secret Santa present, and some of you lovely blog-readers were interested in similar.  Then Christmas got in the way and so it has taken me till now to finish some more notebook covers.  They fit WH Smith A5 notebooks and I have these 4 available at the moment.

A Liberty print one...

Then three made with fabric from TheVintage Sheet Addict.

Pastel-y...

Purple and turquoise...

Purple, yellow and turquoise...

If anyone is still interested, 'bags' one now, for tomorrow they will be accompanying me to Tweseldown Artisan Market. Cover £14 including post and packing, or £17 with a notebook.

Last, but by no means least, my giveaway is still up and running - take a look here.

Here's to a sunny weekend!

Ooh la la! My French Giveaway is finally here!

I'm sorry this has been such a long while in arriving, but you know how it is when you get back from a holiday - piles of washing, then ironing, then tidying everything away (and dealing with the layer of dust and grime that has settled everywhere in your absence)  plus a general 'settling back down' time till you finally feel back in the swing of things and in a more normal groove...On top of that, having been largely deprived of sewing for the duration of the holiday, I was itching to get stitching last week, and was acting like a whirling dervish in my sewing room - not really finding the idea of sitting down at a computer very appealing...

Anyhow, here it is, a little taste of France.  I have two 'prizes' - one for the sewing enthusiasts....

... and one for the less needle-and-thread minded...

For the stitchers (or would be stitchers?) there is a copy of that sweet little red embroidery book I found in the lovely haberdashery in Morzine.

Sweet designs

Crisp white linens and bright red thread

Ideas for embellishing all manner of things around the house

Along with that there will be a copy of 'Il etait un fil' (There was a thread) which is filled with cross-stitch and embroidery ideas and patterns.

What's new pussycat?

A different take on baby bunting - love the little pram

Charts

Transfers (I think!)

Plenty of inspiration to keep you busy, or just to admire!

The other giveaway is a copy of 'Maison et Deco - Shabby Style' magazine, oozing with pretty pictures of shabby chic decor...

Pretty furniture

Gorgeous fabrics and soft furnishings

Oodles of vases filled with pretty blooms

What a stove!

And with that, a selection of repro postcards...

Each of the prizes will come with a little something extra (because magazine reading requires a little sustenance, doesn't it?)

All you need to do is leave a comment at the end of the post, saying which of the prizes you'd like - sewing or non-sewing.  I will leave this open till next Wednesday (that's May 1st)  when I will have a small helper around to draw a name out of a hat (Should that be a beret?)

Bonne chance mes amies!

Mr U-t-B's plan...

...would seem to be to train me up for the Winter Olympics 2014!

Lucky me, as this gets me to some very lovely places!

I have been taken away to the Alps, leaving the older youngsters in charge at home.

We are continuing to discover the Portes du Soleil on the French/Swiss border.
This area is called 'Grand Paradis' and I am in wholehearted agreement with whoever named it as such.

Bluest of skies and snow-capped peaks...

First tracks on fresh powder...

Snow-laden trees and not a sound to be heard...

Pretty stops along the way.  Is hot chocolate a recognised form of elite athlete nutrition?

The snow and ice in the Alps this year is more than I remember seeing before.

This little entrance led to a maybe five metre long tunnel to a bunk-house where you could stay!

In spite of all the snow and Easter holidays, the slopes are quite quiet.

Here's me on one of the 'low-impact' runs
Mr U-t-B is using to build my fitness - you actually have to make a big effort to get along parts of it.  I call it the
'bingo-wing banisher'.

It's not been just the three of us - we were meeting up with family, great fun!

But just in case you were thinking we were being spoilt with blue skies and sunshine, most days have actually been like this...

My 'training' continues for some days more, days which will be brightened by the arrival of this little bundle...

...and her parents!  It's going to be fun!

Welcome once again to new followers.  I do enjoy reading all your comments, so thank you for those!  And as the number above that little 'Followers' icon has just crept over 150, I will very soon host a giveaway.  I have acquired another copy of that lovely embroidery book...

.
..but will also scour the shops nearby for a few items suited to those less inclined towards stitching.
Back soon with my booty!
