It's been fun, Mr Anonymous, but it's time for you to go!

Do you get inundated with comments from Mr, Mrs or Ms Anonymous?

I have to say some of them have made me chuckle.

When I wrote a post called 'Going Crazy'  Mr Anonymous wrote,

'You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.'

Thanks!

Flattery would seem to be the order of the day when making anonymous comments:

'This is really attention-grabbing, You are a very professional blogger. I've joined your feed and sit up looking for more of your great post.'

'It's a shame you don't have a donate button! I'd most certainly donate to this excellent blog! I guess for now I'll settle for book-marking and adding your RSS feed to my Google account. I look forward to brand new updates and will talk about this site with my Facebook group. Chat soon!'

But flattery won't lead this girl to your websites, however hard you try!

There are the ones with bizarre combinations of sentences:

'Squares with various tea leaves and tea flavors inside each square. Unfortunately for me as an addict, I need my crime fix. Spice things up by including these Halloween-themes recipes.'

'Narrow blood vessels lie alongside the intestines of the earthworm and they absorb the nutrients from the alimentary canal feeding the rest of the body. I believe my exact words were "I don't want to be your dirty little secret.'

Then you get the ones that you think are genuine...

'Do you mind if I quote a couple of your posts as long as I provide credit and sources back to your blog? My blog is in the exact same area of interest as yours and my visitors would truly benefit from some of the information you present here. Please let me know if this okay with you. Cheers!

Until you look at the website they want you to look at which is called 'Exercises to Increase Vertical Leap'!

Anyway, as nowadays I seem to get more and more of these  sorts of comments, I decided to take a look at my settings, and I have changed the 'Who can comment' from 'Anyone - includes Anonymous Users' to 'Registered User - includes OpenID'.  Hope this doesn't prevent any proper, would-be commenters from commenting!

I'd be interested to know how other people have theirs set up!

Here's a random photo, because I don't really do photo-less posts.

  1. I did the same thing about 4 months ago and it works - your blogging friends can still comment and the spam goes down almost completely - I have had about four spam comments since I made the change.

    1. I don't think I've ever had one with that offer, but I've had SOOO many for Exercises to Improve Vertical Leap, I'm wondering if that is a euphemism for something! (I think I will actually miss my every-few-posts thoughts of me trying desperately to jump higher having followed that link!)

  3. I don't allow anonymous comments either.............I prefer to connect with my readers and it's always nice to know what real people think of what you write...........the bonus is spam is kept to an absolute minimum too.

  4. Hi Alix, I just monitor mine by receiving an email of the comment first ... then I can choose whether to publish or not. Some of yours are quite amusing though, I must say!

  5. I'm new to this malarkey and found your post interesting (honestly). I'm always suspicious of anon, why are they hiding? I only came for the give-away (really honest) but have stayed for the party and glad I did. Can you do more rag bag rescues, please? Eco Ethel xx

  9. I've never allowed "Anonymous" posters as, before I had a blog, I recall some bloggers having problems with them.
I have got someone called "unknown" following me, been registered a couple of years but only follows my blog! Made their first comment on last week's post. Perhaps someone I know in the real world or on Ravelry who doesn't want to make themselves known and just likes to get my updates. Strange though.

  11. As one who needs to increase my vertical leap-iness I think I should adjust my settings! I don't allow anonymous comments but fear I'm missing out on a world of wonder.

  12. They are bizarre aren't they. Mine seem to have stopped after fiddling with settings - just the nuisance phone calls to sort now !

  13. I've been getting a bit of spam directed to a specific older post, and it made me wonder if it was the title of the post that was attracting them. Changed the title, but the spam kept appearing on the same post, so I closed comments on all my old posts. I think your idea would work better and may do that instead. Thanks for the tip! Wendy

  14. They make me laugh too, but up until now I have not had too many. The little deer looks like he is confused by the comments too!
